Recepie for locking or disabling Windows XP Desktop Wallpaper

Here is a Five step recepie to disable the changing of the Windows XP desktop background (Wallpaper).

1.)Disable Active Desktop.

2.)Remove ‘right click’ Set as Background.

3.)Set Prevent Changing Wallpaper group policy.

4.)Prevent Access to Registry Editing Tools.

5.)Set desktop background via registry.

Step 1

Disable Active Desktop – Users can modify their desktop wallpaper using the active desktop settings. C:\>gpedit.msc User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Desktop -> Active Desktop -> Disable Active Desktop

Step 2

Remove Context Menu Item ‘Set As Background’ – Users can right click images and use the context sensitive menu to select Set as Background. Delete the following key. c:\reg delete CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview

Step 3

Enable the Prevent Changing Wallpaper group policy to remove the tab from the display properties. C:\>gpedit.msc User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> Display -> Prevent Changing Wallpaper

Step 4

Prevent access to registry editing tools. Users can manually change thier desktop wallpaper using a registry editor. Then refresh their dektop to apply the image. C:\>gpedit.msc User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Prevent Access to Registry Editing Tools

Step 5

A user could use a stand alone registry editor to modifiy their desktop wallpaper registry key then refresh their desktop to apply the new setting. So apply a new one at each logon to make it cumbersom. Finally create a logon script to replace the desktop wallpaper registry key. reg.exe ADD "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v Wallpaper /t reg_sz /d C:\WINDOWS\web\wallpaper\Bliss.bmp /f
